‘Gangnam Style’, sets new world record of 300 million views in 76 days

GANGNAM, SEOUL--(Korea Newswire)--The ‘Gangnam Style’ music video, released at 9pm on the 28th set a new world record after reaching 300 million views after only 76 days.

On the 21st ‘Gangnam Style’ set a new Guiness World Record for achieving 2.24 million “likes” and just one week later on the 28th had reached 2.97 million, almost two times the 1.58 million likes received by LMFAO’s ‘Party Rock Anthem’.

The 76 days it took world-star Psy’s ‘Gangnam Style’ to attain 300 million Youtube views is almost two times quicker than it took Jennifer Lopez’s “On The Floor” (139 days) and even faster than it took Justin Bieber’s “Baby” (188 days). The official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup “Waka Waka” took 194 days, and LMFAO’s Party Anthem 227 days.

The videos with over 300 million views occupying places 2-5 on Youtube also occupy places 1-4 on the most liked videos list. Taking into account the unprecedented attainment of 300 million views in 76 days by ‘Gangnam Style’, surpassing Justin Bieber’s “Baby” (780 million views) and breaking the mythological 1 billion views mark is not out of the question.

300 million views means that ‘Gangnam Style’ has been watched by 1 out of every 25 of the Earth’s inhabitants, the entire population of the United States (313,840,000 people) or six times the population of South Korea.

Canadian singer Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe”, which put up fierce competition this year in the fight for the world’s hit song with 270 million Youtube views, was seen to fall behind ‘Gangnam Style’ by nearly 30 million views. It is predicted that it will take “Call Me Maybe” around 229 days to reach the 300 million mark, roughly 3 times more than it took “Gangnam Style”.

Having already risen to number 1 on Itunes and number 2 on the US billboard single chart “Hot 100”, it is predicted that it’s only a matter of time before “Gangnam Style” fully conquers the rest of Youtube and takes a “Grand Slam” of the world’s music charts.
